Driver's Hour of Service
Driver hours of service have been an exciting topic of discussion in the trucking industry and the FMCSA for years! Gone are the days when drivers had to juggle paper logs for their trips, miles, stops, and breaks, leading to numerous compliance issues. Thanks to the Mandatory Requirement of Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), which became mandatory for commercial motor carriers on December 16, 2019, this challenge has significantly diminished!
The journey to ELDs has been fascinating, starting from the 1980s with the first developments, through the advocacy of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and culminating in the final mandate in 2015. Now, ELDs effortlessly track a vehicle's location, miles driven, and engine hours, making life easier for drivers and ensuring compliance like never before!

The mandatory use of ELDs began on December 16, 2019. ELDs monitor a vehicle's location, miles driven, engine hours, and movement. They can be software applications installed on wireless devices like smartphones, tablets, or laptops, or they can be standalone telematics devices. Drivers must be able to show roadside inspectors their hours-of-service logs on a paper printout or on a display screen.

Carriers should research ELD Technology Providers to determine with style of devise will work best and be most cost effective for their companies.
